Day 23 Groede

Monday 21 June 2010

21/6 Drove down the Dutch coast to Groede near the Belgian border. Lots of water crossings including a ferry.


Cycled in the evening along the sea front dunes, fantastically equipped campsite.


Day 21-22 Leiden

19/6 Cycled to Leiden Saturday market. Holland playing Japan in the World Cup.



20/6 Cycled 12 miles to Noordwijk and down the dunes to Katjwick (cold)


Day 21 Altmaar

18/6 Went to Altmaar cheese market, Volendam - touristy - and Zaansche Skans museum of buildings and windmills (cold).


Day 20 Rinjsburg

17/6 Cycled about 9 miles to the beach at Katwijk and back via Rinjsburg.

Day 19 Bavaria - Holland

16/6 Due to the weather forecast we decided to drive right up to the Netherlands to a place we couldn't find on the map Rijnsburg, which some Dutch people had recommended.


We cycled off in the evening to see a windmill.



Day 19 Lechbruck & Rotheburg

15/6 Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Walekd into the town - very steep hill - the town was absolutely amazing and we walked around the battlements.


Day 17-18 Konigsee

13/6 off to  Konigsee and a boat trip on the Lake.

14/6 Called in Rhupolding to see about Biathlon and then back to Lechbruck.




Day 16 Berchtesgaden.

Saturday 12 June 2010

12/6 Went to Berchtesgaden and visited Hitler's Eagles' Nest. It rained from 4pm to 10 am next morning.


This was the campsite where they spoke no English!


Day 15 Salzburg

11/7 Drove to Salzburg via scary road down into Innsbruck and along the motorway.


Cycled into the city but it was very hot. Ate and drank at a monastery brewery.


Day 14-15 - Mittenwald & Garmisch

9/6 Drove to Mittenwald and had a walk in to forest.


10/6 went to Garmisch and up the Zugspitze on the train and cablecar and ate at the top of Germany's highest mountain.

Day 11-13 Fussen

6/6 Stopped at Zeppelin museum on the way to Lechbruck near Fussen. Via Claudia campsite - excellent but very quiet. Thunder and lightning: had to keep getting up to push rain off the awning.


7/6 Drove to Weisschurch, past cows with traditional cowbells. "Noble Rococo" church like nothing we had seen before.




Then on to Neuschwanstein, palace (castle) of Ludwig II. Disneyworld castle is based on it.

8/6 cycled into Lechbruck and spent some time on the site by the lake. Lovely sunny day.



Day 10-11 Lindau

4/6 Big site outside Lindau on Bodensee (Lake Contsance). In the evening sat in the square listening to music.
(noisy goose herding 3 ducks all day every day).


5/6 Cycled down into island town of Lindau. Lovely. View across the lakes to the snow-covered Alps.






Day 6-9 Titisee, Black Forest

31/5 Titisee in the Black Forest. Site by the lake with lovely views.











1/6 We cycled around the lake to Titisee and had Black Forest Gateau and Apple Strudel.


2/6 Cycled 7km into Neustadt.


3/6 Free public transport: we went by train to Frieburg which was closed due to some religious holiday.

Day 4-5 Rudesheim & Heidelberg

28/5 Rudesheim, site by the Rhine. Very expensive. Cycled into the town, with its very old buildings and visited the Asbach distillery.


29/5 Neckargemunde by the Neckar river. Next day we took the boat into Heidelberg.

Day 1-2 Stavelot, Belgium

Dry when we arrived in the Ardennes but poured with rain overnight.


26/5 We got up late, and went into Stavelot and on into Spa, then to the rave track and heard a crash at Eau Rouge just before we got there.

14-16/5 Weekend with Linda & Steve. Nice site, and ate in local pub - walked one night and rode the next.
Went to Glastonbury and the Tor (bought Mart a stick(!) - Plantae Fascillitis) and on to Wells. Beautiful town and went to evensong in the cathedral.
